On Blogging

Have you ever read someone else’s diary and then thought, “how can I do this too, but for money?”

That’s basically how modern business blogging came to be.

During the 90’s, people began writing online diaries using basic HTML. Then platforms, including one called Open Diary, were created to give people a user-friendly way to express their thoughts and opinions. A guy named Jorn Barger coined the term “weblog”, a mashup of the words “web” and “log”, to describe these sites. It only took a couple of years before a guy named Peter Merholz shortened it to “blog” and we’ve stuck with that ever since.

If you were of reading age back then, early blogging was cool because it gave average people the ability to bypass the publishing gatekeepers and freely disseminate their ideas. The digital Wild West allowed bloggers, especially those in journalism and politics, to gain influence and impact events.

Then corporations realized that blogging could boost their bottom line. They adopted the medium to offer industry insights, announce new products, and share customer testimonials. Blogging quickly grew into the money-making industry it is today.

People still vomit their unchained thoughts and emotions for the world (two readers) to see, but social media has been crowned as the preferred online diary. Blogging is far more of a business tool now, and it’s not going away. Here are some reasons why blogging is a big deal for you.

Blogging is the Bread and Butter of Content Marketing

Whereas typical marketing strategies are interruptive—think pop-up ads, cold calls, and SMS promos—content marketing engages an audience organically through informative, insightful, and interesting content.

Blogging is a key component of content marketing, enabling businesses to attract people rather than barge into their lives. This builds credibility, trust, and long-term relationships.

Blogging Boosts SEO

Google’s Search Generative Experience (SGE) is making quality online content more important than ever for getting found online. Now, Google is prioritizing authoritative, substantive content. AI-generated, recycled text won’t cut it. Original and insightful content is the biggest difference maker, and your blog is the natural venue to host it.

Blogging Fosters Relationships With Your Customers

Your blog offers you a chance to tell your brand story. By creating content that showcases your origin, values, and vision, and inviting your audience to interact through effective social media engagement, you can build long-lasting connections with your target audience.

Blogging Builds Your Credibility

You’re an expert in your field. Blogging is an effective way to demonstrate this. By regularly producing engaging blog posts, you can establish thought leadership, educate your audience, and expand your influence.

Blogging Births Content Babies

A well-crafted blog post multiplies. One long-form piece can spawn a variety of additional content—social media posts, one-liners for your website, and ideas for future posts, to name a few.

Blogging Grows Businesses

Because it is an effective way to provide value to customers, quality blogging leads to more page views, more signups, and more sales.
